With the arrival of November, many college football experts are getting their bowl projections together. Many prognosticators are trying to solve the puzzle that is the BCS. First off, no one will ever solve the twisting, confounding puzzle that is the BCS. But it is always fun to try. I’ll try to do the same thing. If the season ended today, here would be my projected bowl matchups.
BCS Championship Game: Alabama vs. Kansas State
The simple fact these teams are ranked #1 and #2 in the BCS standings, makes this the choice for the title game. Granted, this isn’t ESPN’s first choice. As of this moment, the folks from Bristol, Connecticut are salivating over a potential matchup between Alabama and Notre Dame. This is still possible, but as of this moment, the Tide and Wildcats are the top 2 teams in the country, hence the matchup. Still, there are some good storylines. Alabama is looking to be the first team since Nebraska in 1995 to repeat as sole national champions. Bill Snyder, the longtime head coach at Kansas State will be hunting for his first national title. The quarterback battle between A.J. McCarron and Collin Klein is fantastic as both are in the conversation for the Heisman trophy. We shall see if it is these two teams that meet in Miami on January 7.
Sugar Bowl: LSU vs. Notre Dame
If Notre Dame can’t get to the BCS title game, their best bet then is a trip to New Orleans to face an SEC powerhouse. This game would be a low scoring, hard-hitting affair, as defence would rule the day. Notre Dame features senior linebacker Manti Te’o who is an absolute stud and will go very high in the NFL draft. LSU will counter with powerful defensive end Sam Montgomery who is ranked in the top 5 of most NFL draft boards. The last time the Irish and Bayou Bengals hooked up was in January of 2007 at the Sugar Bowl, where LSU steamrolled Notre Dame 41-14. That probably won’t happen this time, but this would be a fascinating contest.
Orange Bowl: Florida State vs. Louisville
The top team in the ACC would face the Big East winner in this bowl matchup. Not very attractive, but then again, no game featuring a Big East team is going to be sexy because, well, the Big East stinks! Florida State would be favoured as they are used to playing in Miami, as they make the biannual trip to South Florida to face the Hurricanes. Louisville is an up-and-coming program, but still the Seminoles would be favoured.
Fiesta Bowl: Florida vs. Georgia
I admit, this would be strange to see two SEC teams meet in Glendale, Arizona. Especially these two side who thoroughly despise each other. But let us not discount the power of ESPN. There is no doubt that ESPN loves the SEC, and they would love nothing more than an all SEC bowl matchup. Especially given the fact that, CBS has done the regular season matchup, between the Gators and Bulldogs, for many years. ESPN would very much sway the Fiesta Bowl committee to bring these two hated rivals together for a rematch. It would be fun to watch. Florida would be looking for revenge, after losing 17-9 to Georgia in Jacksonville, which could cost the Gators a shot at the BCS title. Rematch, you say? ESPN would want one, so don’t bet against it.
Rose Bowl: Oregon vs. Nebraska
This would be the most lopsided matchup in the BCS bowl games. Oregon has the most high-powered offence in all of college football, and they would run over anyone in the Big Ten. Nebraska would be the best of a bad Big Ten conference, especially that undefeated Ohio State is bowl ineligible this year. Remember, the Rose Bowl is big on tradition and the PAC 12 vs Big 10 matchup is what they will favour. The one flaw is, Oregon is still undefeated, and are still in the running for the BCS title game. As it stands, the Ducks may need some help as Alabama, Kansas State and Notre Dame are ranked ahead of them at this time. If the Ducks don’t move up in the rankings, expect them to run over the Big Ten champions. Right now, the Big Ten is Nebraska’s to lose.
Other Possible Bowl Games Just for fun:
Cotton Bowl: Oklahoma vs. Texas A&M
A current Big 12 team vs. a former Big 12 team in Dallas. FOX would like this one.
Capital One Bowl: South Carolina vs. Michigan
SEC vs. Big Ten in Orlando. Marcus Lattimore’s injury probably costs the Gamecocks a BCS bowl game.
Outback Bowl: Wisconsin vs. Mississippi State
Not sure if Mississippi State will remain in the BCS hunt.
Alamo Bowl: Northwestern vs. Texas
The good folks in San Antonio would love to see the Longhorns come to the Alamo City.
Sun Bowl: USC vs. Clemson
Two schools with rich histories. Perfect for CBS.
Holiday Bowl: Oregon State vs. West Virginia
Geno Smith vs. a tough Beaver defence could be the best non-BCS bowl game.
Chick-fil-A Bowl: Duke vs. Ole Miss
The Blue Devils are bowl eligible and this would be a huge game for them.
Remember, these are only projections at this time. This could, and will change by next week. By the end of November, none of this will be right, so get your laughs now, before it is too late.
