Bayern Munich vs. Napoli Preview

A mouth-watering Group A fixture highlights Match Day 7 of the UEFA Champions League. German powerhouse Bayern Munich and Italian up and comers Napoli will oppose each other at the majestic Allianz Arena.

Napoli have been one of the surprise teams in Europe’s top club competition as they sit second in Group A, one point clear of Manchester City and two points behind Bayern.

The Azzure are led by Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani who brings a brisk pace to the attack. Cavani has found the back of the net twice in the Champions League and is hoping to penetrate a stern Bayern defence. Midfielders Marek Hamsik and Christian Maggio are vital to the Napoli attack. Hamsik in particular is a shrewd midfielder who’s darting runs and sublime passing is needed in this critical affair. Hamsik is dealing with rumours he’s headed to Manchester City in the January transfer window so his concentration will be tested.

Bayern have been nothing short of brilliant this season. Sitting atop of Group A, die Roten are steamrolling everyone in their path. Striker Mario Gomez is a menacing striker who can find the net with deadly aplomb. Toni Kroos has been a wonderful surprise for Bayern with his pace and flare for attack. Franck Ribery continues to be a talisman for the ages and his partnership with Arjen Robben is a delight to watch. The back four led by Phillip Lahm are steadfast in their approach who yield few opportunities and less space in their own end. This was especially true in a 2-0 victory over Manchester City in which Bayern completely smothered the Sky Blue’s vaunted attack.

Bayern have firmly established themselves as one of the favourites to unseat Barcelona as European champions and with the final at Allianz, Bayern are playing with motivation and inspiration.

Prediction. Give credit to Napoli for playing with poise and pride but unless Diego Maradonna finds the fountain of youth and rejoins his first European club, Bayern are the clear choice here. 3-0 Bayern Munich.
