Simply put this was the craziest hockey games I’ve seen in 20 years. And what a way to get your first road win of the season!
The Winnipeg Jets and Philadelphia Flyers decided to fly One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest style in a game where no one knew how to play defence. Their was more scoring at the Wells Fargo Centre than inside the Grotto at the Playboy Mansion in its heyday.
The Jets emerged with a 9-8 win in which 9 different players scored for the Jets. Count em up. Randy Jones, Jim Slater, Kyle Wellwood, Tanner Glass, Nik Antropov, Evander Kane, Alexander Burmistrov, Mark Stuart and Andrew Ladd all tallied goals for the Jets. Watch the highlights and see what I mean.
OK now that was done with, I still have many concerns. The Jets did have a 6-2 lead at one point and totally blew it. Ondrej Pavelec looked very shaky in net. He’s supposed to be our number 1 goalie but has been inconsistent so far. Claude Noel looks lost behind the bench. I think the spotlight of the NHL may be too much for him.
But having said all that, I’m proud that the Jets fought back through some adversity and came out with a victory. Sure it wasn’t pretty. Yes I lost a few years of my life. My heart rate is still abnormally off. But it is all worth it when you win a wild game like that.
Some quick notes. The 17 combined goals is the most since 1996 when San Jose and Pittsburgh combined for 18 goals. The Sharks won that game 10-8. The NHL record for most combined goals is 21 set in 1920 by the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto St. Pats, a game the Canadiens won 14-7. It was duplicated in 1985 when the Edmonton Oilers outscored the Chicago Blackhawks 12-9.
